Cycling Shorts From Silk Upholstery
I found some remnants of silk upholstery fabrics at a fabric store for about $10.00 per yard. The new price for this same fabric is about $50.00 to $100.00 per yard.

Go to a fine restaurant or the lobby of a fine hotel and you might see this fabric on the furniture.

Thinking that this same fabric can withstand use on bicycling shorts (where there is tremendous wear on the crotch from the bicycle seat), I decided to give this fabric a chance to prove itself.

This was a success! These shorts lasted close to 5 years of 40 mile a day bicycle commuting from Portand, Oregon to Hillsboro, Oregon.

These shorts would have lasted longer if it were not that I made a mistake of doing my bicycle maintenance while wearing them and getting an enormous grease stain on the outside of one of the legs. Other than that unfortunate stain, these shorts were still in excellant condition.

Prior to engaging in my hobby in sewing, I had used commerical bicycling shorts (which cost about $100.00 from the shops). Those shorts had lasted an average of only abuot 1 to 2 years.
